2024 Season Outstanding Apprentice Awards
Each season, talented young singers and technicians take part in the Santa Fe Opera’s Apprentice Programs, where they receive intensive training and play critical roles in the creation, both on stage and off, of the season’s five mainstage productions. Their work culminates in two nights of staged and costumed Apprentice Scenes, created and performed solely by the apprentices. Of this season’s 82 Apprentice Technicians and 42 Apprentice Singers, 34 won cash awards, honoring their exceptional talent and hard work.

Remembering Richard Gaddes
With heavy hearts, the Santa Fe Opera mourns the loss of a cherished arts leader and our second General Director, Richard Gaddes. His passion for opera and dedication to both artists and audiences enriched our stage and left an indelible mark on the opera world.
Local educators schooled in classroom puppetry
Our Active Learning Through Opera Program has received a $1M Grant from the #startsmall foundation. This grant, along with contributions from longtime, loyal supporters of ALTO, including The Hankins Foundation, Daniel D. Cameron, Jr., and Carol Prins & John H. Hart, allows the Santa Fe Opera to reach rural and tribal schools and enrich the education of New Mexico’s children through arts integration.
The Program recently welcomed master puppeteer Sam Jay Gold to work with NM Educators on Social Emotional Learning (SEL). When implemented in the classroom, puppetry opens up a world of artistic expression and emotional connection, Gold said, because “to bring life to a puppet, we have to bring life to ourselves.”
Writes Margaret O’Hara for the Santa Fe New Mexican “Consider, for a moment, the many facial expressions of Kermit the Frog, from his signature scrunched look of confusion to the sincerity on his face as he sings “The Rainbow Connection.” Though he may be inanimate, no one could accuse him of being emotionless.”
