View or Print Press Release (PDF)
Santa Fe, NM — In celebration of the season of love, the Santa Fe Opera invites opera fans and newcomers to enjoy free film screenings of Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love in Albuquerque, Española, Los Alamos and Roswell. Recorded live from the stage of the Santa Fe Opera during the 2024 Season, it’s a timeless tale of love set to some of opera’s best-loved music. Writes Mark Tiarks for the Santa Fe New Mexican, “…The Elixir of Love could be an ideal choice as a first opera for those who are intrigued but skeptical or for kids.” On-screen translations in English and Spanish will be available.
One hour before every screening, join Santa Fe Opera educator Oliver Prezant for a fun, family-friendly preview of the opera, where you’ll learn about the story, music, singers, sets and costumes. The screening will last two hours with no intermission. Free reservations are required for the Albuquerque and Los Alamos screenings. For all other screenings, seating is first-come, first-served. For questions or more information, contact Santa Fe Opera Manager of Programs and Partnerships, Anna Garcia, at agarcia@santafeopera.org.
The Elixir of Love performance recording is directed by Jesse Fisher with support from assistant director Nathan Troup; Kabby Sound Studios provides sound engineering. About The Elixir of Love — Nemorino, a not-so-clever mechanic, has fallen for Adina, a schoolteacher. He desires her attention but doesn’t feel worthy. Fortunately, he meets Dr. Dulcamara (most certainly a quack) who sells him a “magic elixir” that can make his dreams come true.
Based on Italian cinéma vérité and set in Italy just after World War II when the class system was still a part of society, Stephen Lawless’s production of Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love pairs the charming 1950s Italian countryside with a modern depiction of the eternal struggle between social classes. Adina is a landowner with an olive farm who teaches the children of her workers. Nemorino is an uneducated car mechanic, in love with Adina, who uses the elixir of love to win her hand. Lawless and scenic and costume designer Ashley Martin-Davis have retained the opera’s Italian roots and added American iconic elements. Thomas C. Hase provides the lighting design, Susanne Sheston is the chorus master, Sandra Moore is the stage manager and Sordelet, Inc. oversees fight and intimacy direction.
Conductor Roberto Kalb makes his company debut. Chilean soprano Yaritza Véliz, a rising star following notable debuts at Glyndebourne, the Komische Oper Berlin, Ópera Nacional de Chile, sings Adina in her Santa Fe Opera debut. Former Apprentice singer Jonah Hoskins sings Nemorino, a role he debuted in Spring of 2024 to critical acclaim at the Metropolitan Opera and former Apprentice singer Luke Sutliff, with SFO appearances in the roles of Dancaïre in Carmen (2022) and Demetrius in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2021), returns to sing the role of Nemorino’s rival, Belcore. Mexican baritone Alfredo Daza makes his house debut as the double-dealing Dulcamara and second-year Apprentice singer Cadie J. Bryan is Giannetta.
