Mike VanAartsen
Mike VanAartsen assumed a new role as the Director of Safety, Wellness and Occupational Health in October of 2021, having held a vital role in reopening as the COVID Compliance and Safety Manager since January 2021. Mike is passionate about creating safe spaces for artists to do their best work.
Mike is uniquely qualified for this position through education and training focused on performing arts, life safety, public health, and crisis management. He recently completed coursework with Yale School of Drama’s Technical Design and Production Program and has twenty years of experience in the performing arts industry. Mike holds certifications in First Aid, Mental Health First Aid, Crowd Management, OSHA-30 and 10. He has completed additional training with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), World Health Organization (WHO), the American Red Cross, Event Safety Alliance and Yale School of Public Health
His work highlights the fundamental importance of mental health, accessibility, safety and the overall well-being of the opera’s staff, artists and patrons. VanAartsen plans to build on existing structures to develop and implement numerous programs to ensure the Santa Fe Opera is the safest workplace possible.
Mike has made a career guided by opportunities to support the human experience through art, artistry, education and adventure. He is excited to continue that path in this new role and proud to be a part of the Santa Fe Opera’s present and future.
