First-Ever Opening Night Tailgate Contest Announced
Contestants can sign up for the first-ever Santa Fe Opera tailgate contest to be held on June 28, 2013, Opening Night of the Opera’s 57th season. Opening Night has always been a great reason to celebrate, and opera fans have been creating their own elaborate tailgating set-ups for years. Some people pack up the candelabra and have decorative themes inspired by the night’s performance, some people wear costumes, others just bring delicious grub to take advantage of the parking lot’s gorgeous views. Because many of our patrons already celebrate, we thought, “Why not honor their creativity?”
Co-hosted and broadcast live from the scene by our radio partner, Classical KHFM 95.5 FM, the contest will honor winning entrants with three prizes: First Prize “Best in Show”: Gift Certificate for Terra, the restaurant at Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado, two tickets to a performance this summer; a 2013 season poster signed by artist Dan Namingha and cast members of The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein; and a jeroboam of champagne provided by Catrina Bentley, wife of Board President Carey Ramos and initiator of this contest. Second Prize: Two tickets to a performance this summer complete with preview buffet suppers; a 2013 season poster signed by artist Dan Namingha; and a bottle of champagne. Third Prize: Two tickets to a performance this summer; a 2013 season poster signed by artist Dan Namingha; and a bottle of champagne. All entrants will have their photos taken as a souvenir of the evening.
The judges will be famed mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato; Andrew Cooper, Executive Chef at Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado; and Catrina Bentley.
UPDATE: DUE TO A HIGH NUMBER OF APPLICANTS, TAILGATE CONTEST REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED.
IMPORTANT: entrants must be ticketholders for Opening Night, June 28
The Opening Night performance, Offenbach’s witty comic opera The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein with brilliant mezzo-soprano Susan Graham in the title role, begins at 8:30 PM. The extraordinary cast also includes tenor Paul Appleby as Fritz (the object of the Duchess’s attention), former Santa Fe Opera apprentice singer Anya Matanovič as Wanda, Aaron Pegram as Baron Puck, former Santa Fe Opera apprentice singer Jonathan Michie as Prince Paul, and Kevin Burdette as General Boum. Emmanuel Villaume conducts.
