"My son was asked by his mom if he wanted to see the new Indiana Jones movie and told her, 'No, I want to see the same opera we saw last weekend!' He loved getting dressed up and seeing people sing the story."

Pueblo Opera Program

Pueblo Opera ProgramEach year the Pueblo Opera Program (POP) reaches more than 2,000 Native American children from New Mexico's 21 pueblos and reservations. Through POP, children participate in the Youth Night at the Opera program and enjoy performances by the apprentice singers during the Spring Opera Tour, along with writing and producing their own operas as part of the Student-Produced Opera project.

POP was founded in 1973 to provide exposure and involvement in opera to Native Americans, as well as reciprocating Pueblo hospitality in the areas of music, dance and drama. The program is guided by an advisory committee which includes many parents and elders from the pueblos and reservations. POP has led generations of children to the discovery that, through its universal themes and emotions, opera readily expresses meaning for the youth of today.
