The Apprentice Programs
Our apprentice programs provide advanced training for some of America's most talented and dedicated young opera singers and theater technicians. Following two or three summers as program participants, many move on to work at opera houses, theater companies, and in film or television, thanks to the skills and the professional relationships they have developed here.
Apprentice singers receive voice lessons, repertory coachings, lessons in movement and diction, and performance opportunities in mainstage roles as well as the ensemble. They also audition for opera managers and agents from around the world.
Apprentice technicians function in every backstage department, working side by side with internationally renowned designers, directors and production personnel in the areas of stage operations, properties, audio and video, costumes, production/music services, make up and wig construction, stage lighting and scenic art.
The singers program has helped launched the careers of William Burden, Patrick Carfizzi, Michelle DeYoung, Joyce DiDonato, James Morris, Brandon Jovanovich, Dimitri Pittas, Samuel Ramey, Julien Robbins, Kurt Streit, and Neil Shicoff, among many others. Alumni of the technicians program work around the world as designers, production managers, technical directors, and stage managers.
