    MEET OUR DONORS

every gift has a story: Gene Wampfler

Meet Our Donors -- Gene WampflerGene Wampfler began his retirement planning years ago when he used his summer vacations to scout retirement locations. Opera was always on the agenda, and when Gene noticed that The Santa Fe Opera was performing one his favorite operas, Handel’s Ariodante, it brought him to New Mexico for the very first time. “What I remember is that it was an awesome experience – watching a live performance of one of my favorite operas which I thought I would never see in person, the incredible SFO theatre and setting; the history and architecture of Santa Fe; and the overall beauty of New Mexico. By the end of that trip, I knew that I was going to eventually move there.”

Since his retirement Gene has enjoyed traveling to see operas in many parts of the world, “but the Santa Fe Opera remains special. During June of each year, I enjoy beautiful daytime drives up from Albuquerque to the Opera to watch rehearsals with birds flying in and out and singing along to the music.  During July and August, I enjoy the season – the great sunsets during my drive up and driving back under an often star-filled sky all while reliving many an evening of great opera. So for me, the Santa Fe Opera is the sum of many events which make for a complete and incomparable experience.”

When updating his estate plans recently, Gene remembered these experiences and chose The Santa Fe Opera as a beneficiary of his IRA.” Under my previous plan, the proceeds from my IRA would flow into my estate, be liquidated, and be subject to heavy taxation.  I wanted to change that to make tax-exempt institutions such as the SFO as direct beneficiaries of the actual securities. IRA designations are a great way to ensure maximum value in estate bequests.”

Gene has designated his gift to the General Director’s Premiere Fund.  “I’ve been fortunate to see a number of premiere presentations at SFO.  Opera is an evolving art form, it’s not just about the classics.  I am happy and excited that my contribution will assure the future of this important aspect of its mission.”
