2014 Season Cast Changes and Additions
SANTA FE OPERA CONDUCTOR LAUREATE KENNETH MONTGOMERY TO REPLACE EVAN ROGISTER FOR 2014 IMPRESARIO/ROSSIGNOL DOUBLE BILL
Baritone Anthony Michaels-Moore returns to be featured in dual roles
Santa Fe Opera General Director Charles MacKay today announced two changes to the lineup for the 2014 season. Evan Rogister, who was scheduled to conduct the double bill of Mozart’s The Impresario and Stravinsky’s Le Rossignol in the 2014 Summer Festival Season, has withdrawn from the production. Kenneth Montgomery, who was named the Company Conductor Laureate last season, will take over the run.
Mr. MacKay also announced that famed British baritone Anthony Michaels-Moore will take on the roles of both the Impresario and the Emperor in Le Rossignol, returning to Santa Fe for the first time since his acclaimed 2009 appearances in La Traviata and in Paul Moravec’s The Letter.
Maestro Montgomery has appeared regularly with the Company since 1982. He has led eighteen different productions including the memorable La Belle Helene in 2003, Beatrice and Benedict in 2004 and Cinderella in 2006. His most recent appearance was in 2012, leading the concert Susan Graham and Friends. Maestro Montgomery’s distinguished career has taken him to important orchestras in his native Ireland and throughout Europe; he was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2010.
The pairing of the two operas in the double bill was first suggested by Mr. MacKay. Called “a comedy with music,” in this production of The Impresario several Mozart concert arias have been added, and the dialogue, spoken in English, was prepared by one of Britain’s foremost translators and dramatists Ranjit Bolt in collaboration with director Michael Gieleta. They have tied the two operas together creating an unusual pairing. The two divas who battle for roles in Le Rossignol, based on a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, win their parts and the impresario as well appears as the Emperor.
The double bill opens Saturday, July 19 for five performances. Information on the season including on-line purchase of tickets can be found at www.santafeopera.org
